Take Back the Tap!
Help us eliminate single-use plastic water bottles in Nanaimo.
Surfrider Mid Island’s new campaign, Take Back the Tap, has the end goal of banning all single-use plastic water bottles 1L and under from Nanaimo!
We will achieve this campaign by supporting businesses in eliminating plastic water bottles, and offering water from the tap, fountain, and/or a water dispenser. We are challenging all businesses in Nanaimo to join the campaign to eliminate single-use plastic bottles. Surfrider Mid Island will then request that Mayor and Council ban single-use plastic water bottles 1L and under.
You can support the campaign by signing our petition to Mayor and Council and pledging to use your reusable bottle!
Here on Vancouver Island, we are fortunate enough to have access to amazing freshwater sources.
With this , there is no need to be purchasing plastic water bottles for daily use and waste. We invite all of Vancouver Island and beyond to be part of celebrating fresh, delicious, safe drinking water that we are so fortunate to have free access to.
Plastic water pollution facts
Many water bottle companies use water sources from some of the most drought ridden places in the West, such as California to package and sell to places where there is already ample water supply.
The plastic water bottle industry uses 17 million barrels of oil every year in the United States to make the bottles, which must then be transported and refrigerated using additional fossil fuels
60-70% of plastic water bottles sold do not get recycled and ultimately end up end up in landfills and waterways
One plastic water bottle can break down into enough small pieces to be present on every mile of every beach in the world

Refill your reusable bottle with tap water, let businesses know you support the Take Back the Tap Campaign. If you're a business, join the campaign and eliminate all single-use plastic water bottles. Together, we can work to ban this unnecessary item and inspire other locales to follow suit.
